Content Imagination
What's Up is a super-exciting/uber talented instrumental rock group,
recently transplanted to Portland, OR from Sacramento, CA.
Multi-talented/multi-instrumentalist Robby Moncrieff formed What's Up
in early 2008 in an effort to realize his musical vision, and continues
to lead the group.
His credentials include work with notable musicians like, Marnie Stern
and Zach Hill (of Hella), as well as The Advantage - contributing as
both a touring and studio guitarist, as well as leading musical
arrangement. Obey Your Brain is proud to present this amazingly crafted
production of What's Up material due to Moncrieff's longtime
camaraderie with bands like Need New Body and other OYB freak
out/progressive acts.
Robby is also the producer/recording engineer behind Content
Imagination and has also recently recorded the latest, as yet-untitled
album for New York/Portland/Connecticut transplants Dirty Projectors,
as well as co-producing Angel Deradoorian's solo release with Dave
Longstreth of DP in December 2008.
Moncrieff enlisted Edward S. Briggs (drums/keys) and Brian Marshall
(bass) to help record What's Up's debut album in the second floor,
add-on apartment of the underground Sacramento art house 'The Witch
Dome' in April 2008. This LP contains all the immediacy and finely
crafted tones necessary to excite one's ear drums. What's Up is
scheduled to play SXSW as part of a split presentation of this mini LP
by Tomlab and Obey Your Brain and continue to tour through the spring
and summer of 2009.
"What's Up?'s music is effective enough to dupe even a solemn,
squinty-eyed David Copperfield type into bopping around with the
syncopated sounds" - Sacramento News and Review
"What's Up is that rare thing: a technical instrumental band with lots
of feeling." - San Francisco Bay Guardian
"There's something in the way the melody rides on the dirty keyboard
bounce and the jerking rhythm of the drums and shaker that makes it
seem like it could be some of the best beach music ever." -San
Francisco Bay Guardian
